EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is generally used in panel applications due to its insulation properties and high strength to weight ratio. Two grades of EPS are utilised in IXL Insulated Panels; P – Grade (standard) and F – Grade (Self Extinguish).

The F – Grade EPS contains a flame retardant additive (FRA), which restricts the extent of burn and will self extinguish if the source of the fire is removed. Standard Density (SD) and High Density (HD) are available for different applications.

Physical Properties of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)

Standard (SD) Density EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) has a standard density of 15 kg/cubic meter. Its thermal conductivity (K value) is between 0.032-0.036 W/m.K @ 10 degrees Celsius. Its recommended operating temperature is within the range of -50 to 85 degrees Celsius. Standard (SD) Density EPS has its Compressive strength of 65-110 kPa, Tensile strength of 150-230 kPa and Shear strength of 90-120 kPa. And the water absorption is 5 wt%.

High (HD) Density EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) has a standard density of 20 kg/cubic meter. Its thermal conductivity (K value) is between 0.031-0.035 W/m.K @ 10 degrees Celsius. Its recommended operating temperature is within the range of -50 to 85 degrees Celsius. High (HD) Density EPS has its Compressive strength of 100-160 kPa, Tensile strength of 225-325 kPa and Shear strength of 120-150 kPa. And the water absorption is 4 wt%.

Combustility Test for EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)

Combustility is the fire test of foam materials. The plastic material was tested to see if it was flammable or not. And to determine the fire resistance level, the material was tested the fire spread rate. The Compressive strength (as per ASTM D1621) was tested by the Department of Science Service and the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi

P and F – Grades of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)
  • F – Grade (Self Extinguish): add flame retardants to materials before foam being formed/producing blocks. Suitable for construction purposes.
  • P – Grade (standard): When this foam hits or gets exposed directly to flames, it will melt. Not suitable for construction purposes.
